What is a Certified Nurse Midwife?
A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who has specialized education and training in both nursing and midwifery. In Texas, Certified Nurse Midwives are required to possess a Masters degree and be a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). However all of our midwives have a Doctorate degree in nursing (DNP). CNMs practice in hospitals and clinics. Some also practice in birthing centers and attend home births. CNMs prescribe medications, treatments, and medical devices, and therapeutic & diagnostic measures.
Many women find having a midwife present during birth to be a calming influence. A certified nurse midwife can offer a holistic birth experience. Midwives are supportive of natural births and can also provide pain medicine when requested by the patient. Research has shown women who give birth with midwives tend to have lower Cesarean section (C-section) rates and lower rates of premature births. Certified Nurse Midwives do not perform surgery or provide care for high risk pregnancies. CNMs can assist with Cesarean deliveries and gynecological services.
Certified Nurse Midwives also provide a full spectrum of care for women of all ages. This is why Cleburne Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud to have CNMs on staff.
